Florence’s walls, of which only a few stretches survive, were arranged as gates linked by walls, interspersed with towers. The towers stood 200 Florentine braccia apart, about 100 metres. They served both aesthetic and defensive purposes. Beyond Porta San Frediano towards the Arno are the small Verzaia and Santa Rosa towers.
