Porta San Frediano is the largest and most imposing of Florence’s city gates. Founded in 1333, it was probably designed by Andrea Pisano. Its height was reduced in the sixteenth century and a tiled gable roof added. Its most interesting feature is the original gate, the largest in the city, comprising three openings. Twelve metres high, it is entirely covered with nails to strengthen it.
