Facing the Arno, Piazza Poggi received its name in 1911 in honour of the architect who reshaped late-nineteenth-century Florence. Previously it was Piazza delle Molina, recalling the old San Niccolò mills that operated here until 1870. The square’s complete redesign left the San Niccolò Tower, once aligned with the walls, standing at its centre. The tower can be visited in summer and offers an unusual view of the city. To the south, the square is bounded by the Rampe and their dramatic water features, also designed by Giuseppe Poggi. Slightly tucked away on the square is the small but interesting Rodolfo Siviero House Museum. In his apartment, Siviero kept a small selection of the artworks he dealt with throughout his life. On the northern side, bounded by the Arno, the so-called Third Garden deserves attention: a large green space whose appearance changes with the river’s flow.
