View map · OpenStreetMapManifattura Tabacchi is a former industrial site covering 100,000 square metres close to Florence’s historic centre. Its 16 buildings are elegantly arranged into a variety of squares, streets and passages. Built in the 1930s by engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, it is one of the most significant expressions of Italian Rationalism. Until its closure in 2001, it produced cigars and cigarettes.
The redevelopment project aims to restore and preserve the site while enhancing its distinctive character and historical importance. Through an innovative process of urban regeneration, Manifattura Tabacchi seeks to become a new centre for contemporary art, fashion, education and emerging craft trends.
It currently houses event spaces, artist residencies and craft workshops. It is home to Polimoda, and its lively café-restaurant attracts young people. In summer it also hosts open-air cinema.
