The Franchi stadium was built in Campo di Marte between 1930 and 1932 to a design by engineer Pier Luigi Nervi. An example of Italian Rationalism, it introduced structural features highly innovative for their time, including the unsupported canopy and spiral staircases. A Turin company laid the turf, whose perfectly drained base immediately ensured excellent quality. The stadium has been altered repeatedly, especially ahead of the 1990 World Cup. Its capacity is 47,000, and it hosts ACF Fiorentina’s matches.
