The Old Mint Tower forms part of Florence’s final circuit of walls, begun in 1284 by order of the Signoria and associated with Arnolfo di Cambio’s design. Its name recalls the minting of Florentine coins, including the famous florin, using hammers powered by the river’s flow. The city mint moved here from its original location near Palazzo Vecchio to make room for the Loggia dei Signori.
