The square can be reached from Borgo San Frediano, Borgo Stella, Via Santa Monaca and Piazza Piattellina. Its name refers to the Carmelite church of Santa Maria del Carmine, which dominates the square and houses the celebrated Brancacci Chapel. The square’s name now also covers the broad arm connecting it to Borgo San Frediano, despite that space’s clearly different form and origin. The large open area in front of the church was laid out to meet the needs of preaching and public gatherings during religious festivals. Except for the through roads, the square was long occupied by a large car park. This was removed in January 2015 when the area was pedestrianised as part of a municipal project to reorganise traffic throughout the neighbourhood, improve green spaces and support tourism and local crafts.
