Not everyone knows the Quercione watering trough, called the Fontana delle Boccacce, on one of the large lawns in the Cascine Park. It stands in the middle of the meadow and was created for cows and later horses, as Grand Duke Peter Leopold regarded the Cascine as his agricultural and hunting estate. Architect Giuseppe Manetti built it between 1789 and 1796. Also used by local people, the fountain earned the name Boccacce, or “grimacing faces”, from the curious marble figures at the bases of its five spouts. Over the years, the Quercione lawn became a place for sport, and the fountain has remained important for quenching the thirst of park visitors.
